Google Phone + OpenSocial = Mobile Networking?
The Google phone is rumored to be announced today. The details regarding whether it’s going to be a physical phone or a platform for application development on smart phone or a combination thereof are all a matter of speculation now. However, the question that comes to mind is, is this project related to OpenSocial that was announced last week?
Mobile Social Networking
If you marry OpenSocial to Google Phone project, what you can potentially get is Mobile Social Networking. The platform offered by OpenSocial (when extended to mobiles) can enable phone users to access most of the content which as of now is mainly accessible only when you’re using computer, and more.
There are a few aspects of social networking websites and the widgets/applications on these sites which make more sense to have on a mobile phone than on PC. For example, if there is a widget that shows the weather and news for your city, that would be even better if it could show the news and weather of the city where you’re right now, and not just the city you usually live in. Similarly, sharing photographs and videos with your friends on a particular social networking site becomes much more fun if you could take a picture using phone and upload that right away along with automatic notification to all your friends, and so on…
It’s obvious that there are a lot of potential synergies between Google phone and OpenSocial so no one should get surprised if the Google phone platform supports widgets built using OpenSocial. It may have major implications on how social networking works today - let’s wait and watch!
